For my 10gal tank, I'm using the Fluval 1 underwater filter. The pictures on the box show the filter can be mounted in just about any orientation. The only instructions are that the intake must be 1cm below the water line.

What's your suggestion on the most effective orientation?

I currently have it installed on the right side of the tank, vertical orientation, with intake at top, output at bottom. It's far enough from the back side of the tank that I can still get my fingers between it and the back of the tank for removal of the filter for maintainence.

So other possibilities:

Flip it over (intake on bottom, output on top).

Turn it side ways and located near the top.

Turn it side ways and move it to the back of the tank (output located in the corner so that the rest of the unit can hopefully be hidden behind some plants.

most people tend to have the intake on the bottom so it sucks up dirt as much as it can from bellow.
