My pet store betta might have been inbred or something, I am not sure, but he is very small. He is a blue veil tail and it about and inch, including fins. Because of his size, he has trouble eating betta pellets, I have to crush them first. I was thinking that maybe a diet of live foods would be easier for him to eat and healthier. What type of live foods would be best? I wouldn't mind starting a culture or anything, that actually sounds like an interesting project.

Flightless fruit flies are awesome. Easy to find in most pet shops that carry reptiles, they usually come in a convenient jar, do not need any special care or anything, great for fish (especially small ones), but best of all they have no wings! they cant fly!

+1 on the flakes, my first betta wouldn't touch pellets. If you do want to try live mine liked daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp.
