but how does one of those DIY tanks with plywood sides hold water? Do they paint it with some kinda sealant? How does the plywood take the water pressure for extended periods?

no, no, no, I don't want to build one, I'm just wondering how everything could seal up? Wouldn't the wood's expansion with humidity/temp pretty much make any seal leak at some point?

the front is made of glass or acryic but only the front. search around researchers use these because they are so cheap, thats what they said.

its a DIY lab tank basically
 
From what I gathered it is cost effective in very large tanks where the price of glass goes way up do to thickness. Of course you need to be pretty handy too.
