We need to move our Oscar from a 55 gallon to a 125 gallon tank. The GH in the current tank is too high (12-13), the Ph is ok (7.2) and the Kh is low (3). The Gh of our tap water is much lower (about 6) so if we use that to fill the new tank, even if we use most of the old water, will the change in Gh harm the fish? Any advice welcome!

Thanks so much! Do you think we should set up and cycle the new tank with its new filter, leaving him in the old one till it is ready, or move the old filter/some water/old gravel over to the new tank, filling the rest with new water to try to retain his existing bacteria? This is our first time trying this kind of move!

Water has basically zero bacteria in it, so just use new water. That's what I do. Substrate has a little, if your not using it in the 55 then some in a bag or panty hose stocking will help. 95% of your beneficial bacteria is in the filter. Move it over for a few weeks, or the media into the new filter, and let it establish a new colony

Just move him to the new one and monitor the water parameters. He'll be fine. It'll cycle fine with his nasty self and the old filter media, lol
