Neon tetras "real"?

Were they modified any way by scientist or anything. I know glo-fish but never heard about neons. They don't look real natural.
 
Yes, they are naturally colored, but are far more vibrant in aquariums than in nature due to lighting differences, seeing as their natural biotope is heavily shaded and often has dark, tannin-stained water, far from the bright fluorescent lighting in home aquaria, don't believe me...look at how subdued their colors look just after you turn the lights on.
