yes on white sand it really shows up. I went with natural color sand it doesn't show as much. I hope this is what you asking your op is a little hard to understand.

Black sand it shows up pretty badly also (though not just pleco, most any fish/snail).

I've got one tank with natural gravel and ecco-complete and it is much less noticeable.

A lot depends on how aggressively you plan to (or can, e.g. with plants) vacuum.
