The LFS lady and my tank cycle

She said that my tank may never cycle because I have sand instead of gravel. She recommended changing out the substrate.


Is this true?!

No not at all. Substrate choice makes no difference.

No, most of the bacteria needed for a cycle to occur lives in the filter.

No! The beneficial bacteria lives on the surface. Whether it be gravel, sand, rocks, or class. The LFS is just up $elling you.

I use sand in all 7 of my tanks. I wouldn't take advice from her again...
