I have a 20g tank with 5 cherry barbs in it, I don't know what else I want to put in the tank. I was thinking of getting some corydoras catfish to help keep the bottom of the tank cleaner, I'm not sure what else I want to put in there. I was talking to someone at my LFS last week and he recommended dwarf gouramis. Will they get along well with my barbs?

I Would say a single dwarf gourami would be ok with cherry barbs.

Cherry barbs will do just fine with dwarf gourami. I would suggest you get more barbs though, for a total of 8-10.

the larger groups stops any possible aggression, although cherries are generally peaceful, they may hurt each other, so more numbers disperses the aggression.
The owner at my LFS told me that I could get 2 blue and 2 red dwarf gourami and they would all be fine together, but I'm doing some reading now and it seems like if you get more than one gourami they will be aggressive towards each other

Sadly, this is true. I'm fortunate that my LFS has a much more honest and customer-focused culture.
