Okay. Good to know on the substrate. What about live plants? I assume as long as there is plenty of algae/food then they'll be fine and won't need any sort of live plant.
 
Correct they won't need plants. You could try low light plants or a plant. I've never attempted to plant a tank that small.
 
I think artificial plants for a tank this tiny would work fine. Especially since I've never had live plants before. I'll probably get a 5 gallon when I'm ready to get a betta fish and experiment with live plants in the 5 gallon. Thanks guys!
 
An Anubias nana petite is easy and nice looking, just tie to a rock or DW. Works in most light. If you wanted to try one sometime. Doesn't grow too fast, stays neat and tidy.

Plant not needed as KF mentioned. Have fun and do plenty of pwc.
 
That would work. When you make the leap to plants there's a lot of knowledgeable people here who can help you out. Keep us updated on what you do with your 1.5g.
