Plecos are tropical fish and will not do well in cold weather. For the summer, I'd say it might work, but it wouldn't survive a winter, certainly not in Iowa.

I know this is old but for anyone else who might read this-

The common pleco can live in a deep pond (~3'+) year round. I've heard of people who have ponds in New Jersey that do this.

But like said above they would be fine for the summer then catching them and bringing them inside during the winter would be the best choice.

The fancier plecos shoudn't be kept outside.
