I have a new aquaclear hob. I have several questions about the maintenance of the filter.
1) I've heard not to replace the filter until it wears out, but do I rinse the filter out in saltwTer when I do a water change?
It would seem this would dispose of beneficial bacteria.

2) if so, how often should I clean the filter?

3) do I also rinse the carbon filter and bio balls? ( don't know if that's proper term)

4) do I ever take out the actual (plastic) filter and clean it, or just the medium inside it?

Rinse the sponges in old tank water. That will not hurt the bacteria. You really do not need the carbon. You can rinse the balls once in a while in old tank water as well. I rinse mine monthly, depends how dirty they get. Once every 3-4 months I take the filter apart and clean it.
