In the bed, I notice growths of brown, green and purple algae. The brown can be in large areas and is not pleasant to look at. Would I be disturbing the bed too much be sifting thru the sand closest to the glass to wipe the brown off?

Well according to the DSB boys its a good sign to have cyano in the bed. I would not sift down around it, you will be more likey to stir up a bunch of toxins.

Probably. Stiring the bed even a little could intorduce oxygen to the anoxic zone which could cause some serious problems.
