will having a protien skimmer cut back on algae?

I would somewhat think so. The Protein skimmer helps the water quality by removing dissolved organics and dead waste. Where Algae feeds on light,Phospates,stagnant water. I am sure they affect each other somewhat but not the magic bullet in solving the problem. A lot of algae problems come from the impurities in source water in which the skimmer can not correct.

Yes it will help by removing DOC from the water but it wont be a cure all. Lighting, overfeeding and others will cause algea also.
