I'm starting my first 5.5 gallon tank and it is currently cycling. I need some stocking ideas. I definitely don't want to do just a Betta or an all shrimp tank.

Thank you! Four or five? I may put a few shrimp in too.

My LFS actually suggested 3 tetras and 2 corries. How does that sound?

Depends on the tetras

A 5.5g tank is very small and doesn't give you many options.

Chili rasboras (or any micro rasbora)
Celestial pearl danios
Dwarf emerald rasboras
Clown killies
Least killies
Maybe ember tetras
Dwarf puffer

Pygmy cories are pretty much the smallest cory type and even for them I prob wouldn't recommend smaller than a 10g. All cories and tetras should ideally be in groups of 6+.

Since I'm new to this, can you explain why I can't do my idea? Not being stubborn, just trying to learn.

You could do green neons or ember tetras, dwarf corys as well. These fish prefer groups, they take comfort in numbers. Stocking 1 or 2 of each will result in stressed fish.

Thank you! How many of those fish, Brookster? 4-5 of one species?

4 of each would be ok with 50%weekly wc's, I do 2 wc's a week on my smaller tank.

Here's a list of small fish I would suggest:
Celestial pearl danios
Shell dwellers
Maybe a wild type betta like an emerald betta
Chili rasbora
Pygmy Cory
Some pseudomugil rainbows
Any sort of fry
Dwarf puffers
Ember tetra
Glowlight tetra
Neon tetra
Clown killies

Thanks guys! I put some neon tetra in there today! They seem to be hanging out in one corner, but I'm assuming that's normal for the first day?

That's what my cardinals did on their first day, and scientifically they are one if the 4 types of neon tetra
