I got a new goldfish and his tail is a little torn up. I didn't have the option of a quarantine tank, so I'm wondering what if anything I can/should do to prevent an infection or help him heal his tail.

Just keep the water as clean as possible.
How often do you typically do water changes/gravel vacs and how much water do you replace? It would help to do a 25% water change twice a week until the fin heals.

Another thing you can do is add some MelaFix to the tank for a few days. It's the aquarium equivalent of Neosporin ointment - it promotes healing and has some antibacterial properties. However, it doesn't affect the biofilter if used as directed.

Excellent! I'll do that. I'm pretty obsessive compulsive about water changes so the water is usually crystal clear, and I'll keep that up. Thanks for the melafix advice.
