Its a type of worm in a hard shell type of tube. I'm trying to remember the name exactly, but they are harmless filter feeders. I have them all over my rock too. You'll see little strings (like spider webs) coming out of the tubes which is used to catch food from the water column.

I think vermatid worms. Or something like that but that you are right in the description. I've got tons of them and yes they shoot out strings to catch food. Can be unsightly at times. Harmless filter feeders
