I assume they sit in the live rock and filter the water

Absolutely!

It won't need an anemone exactly, much as a clown doesn't need one. However it will want something similar to live in. Mine hitched in on a frogspawn and later decided on a torch coral. At night he would wander away a bit but always came back to it. I'd recommend having a tentacled coral for it to live in, but I wouldn't say it *needs* one.

Great stuff, I've got a torch that is ready and waiting, my frogspawn is the host to a high fin goby and pistol shrimp (living underneath it)
Green star polyp is vacant and tonnes of Xenia
