My buddy just put live rock in his new SW aquarium and has been doing a fishless cycle. This algae (atleast I think that is what it is) has started growing on his live rock. Is this anything bad and if so how should he remove it?

It's cyano... It has to do with nitrates and phosphates in your water. Suck it out and increase water quality.
