I was wondering how many gph does a pump need to circulate a thirty gallon tank with a twenty gallon sump. I have a pvc overflow thay can be adjusted to the dimensions of a pump. But how much power does the pump need to have to cycle the water and serve its purpose of a sump.

Would it be better if I did something along the line of 420gph or something huge like 1300 + gph? Would the 420 be too small because you lose flow rate as you pump water vertically?

Best thing I ever did was buy a variable speed return pump. I bought a Reef Octopus Diablo DC 3500 it's rated at 950 ish gph on high. It has 6 different speeds and a feed mode. When I was shopping around a feed mode was one thing I wanted on most of my equipment.
