I'm new to this whole soil in an aquarium idea, and am currently debating between potting soil and a sand peatmoss mix. If you use soil is there a particular type of soil recommended or will any potting soil due? Are there any issues that arrise from using potting soil. Thanks in Advance for any input.

I was wondering the same thing. I got laughed at in the chat room when I asked if I could use potting soil. So I decided to get pool filter sand instead. lol

Well Mandy from Colorado, welcome aboard. Together we will find the answer to the question.

You can use Organic potting soil. You do want to be careful what you buy. Some have loads of added stuff you don't need.
http://theaquariumwiki.com/Walstad_method this has some great tips.
If you Google Walstad method you'll get lots of tips. She also wrote the book on NPT( Natural Planted Tanks)

Just cap the soil with sand. Plain soil is a nightmare and will make your tank murky.

Hope this helps. I move stuff too much to do soil, but may try it later :)
