For those of you that jeep java ferns, what have you found to be the best way to get them to grow? Buried in the substrate or left on a rock or piece of driftwood?

Definitely tied to something. They can have issues thriving depending on how they are buried.

Would it be ok I put it between two rocks and kinda behind a a piece of wood? It's not buried in the substrate at all.

Yeah, mine grow best on my DW. If you can wedge the roots in between the rock so the roots will grow on something that would be fine I guess

The way I have it is the roots are closer to the wood than anything, the rocks are really just on either side to keep it from floating away.

You can attach it fairly easily with cotton string or (my preference) fishing line.
