Lowering the PH naturally

My plants are not looking so good, so I was going to buy a buffer, but my LFS said not to lower the PH with the buffer because it will just stress out the fish. So I was wondering if there was a way to lower it naturally.

Buffers are more for maintaining a stable pH or even raising it by raising the kH / dH / GH ect. Tannins however help to lower pH ... add DW or Peat moss(filter).

Generally speaking, plant health and pH are not meaningfully related.
