Hi I currently have a 20 long with a small school of salt and pepper Cory’s and a single dwarf gourami. I have a 20-40 gallon hang on back filter and a sponge filter. Do you think I could safely add a school of neon tetras to liven it up or would that be too much?

Yes a school of 6 should be fine, neons are very small so they won't add too much to your bio load.
