Does Macro Algae need lighting to survive?

Hi All,
May be a silly question - but here goes.

Does Macro Algae need light to grow?

Reason I ask, is that I have some in my Tank wedged under some rock, and it keeps getting dislodged. Can I put it in my Wet-Dry Trickle filter? Or will it perish without light in there?

I used to like the look of the green in the tank, but it keeps breaking up and I am finding it all around my tank and in my power heads.

Duh, just re-thought this - they wouldnt be able to perform photosynthesis...
Guess I just answered my own question.
