live sand covering CC?

I now have crushed coral as my substrate and would like to put live sand in. Is it possible to cover the cc with the sand? I have looked for other posts but only found something about completely removing the CC.

If you cover the CC, it will simply rise to the top and lay there. The smaller particles (sand) will sink to the bottom......
