I have a 125 gallon tank that I want to set up for fish only. My question is, do I absolutely need a sump or wet dry system to run the tank or is it possible to run it on an appropriate sized canister filter?..I only plan to stock it with a maximum of about 5 medium sized fish or so.

It can definitely be done with a canister. Are you adding live rock? If you go canister get the biggest you can afford and make sure you do weekly maintenance on it so the nitrates don't build up.

Agreed. It can be done, but it 's going to take a lot more work. As stuff builds up in the canister, your nitrates will elevate, so it's going to be a life of constant water changes and cleaning out the canister to maintain good water quality.

I also bet that you end up with more than five fish. :)

Is the tank drilled? A sump will make life much easier and is a place to put your skimmer, etc. like Todd said you will definitely get more than 5 fish

That's the problem the tank isnt drilled and I dint know where I can get it drilled..and im pretty sure its tempered so it cant be drilled....but ive heard that the tempered part of the tank is the bottom glass and that the sides arent...how true is that?

It depends on the tank. I think there is a way you can check to see if it's tempered but I'm not sure. If it is you can purchase the hang on overflow and use that instead of drilling the tank.

Isn't a diy sump a lot less expensive than a canister anyway? Those fluvals are 200$ you can make a sump for half that
