Brand new fish person here. So loving this hobby! I've kept mice, herps, and a feline, but fish are foreign! Learning a lot though! This is a great place!
 
Freshwater. Saltwater is intriguing, and there is a saltwater exclusive store across from the school at which I teach. But I found I had a 10G on my hands, and decided to with freshwater. Saw some amazing zen planted tanks and the LOLcat in me said "want!"
 
I too am FW, and a planted 10 gal can be gorgeous. You should look at our planted aquascaping forum to get you drooling.
