I've been in the hobby for about 10 years. I am currently doing my first planted tank. My passion are clown loaches and this is my current tank which I've been so far unsuccessful.

My First Planted 55 Gallon Tank as of 6/19/11:

Fish:
(Gold Gourami-dead in June 2011 because ich)

Plants:
Lemon Bacopa (Bacopa Caroliniana)
Water Wisteria (hydrophone difformis)
Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus)
Rising Japanese Moss Balls (Cladophora aegagropila)

Conditions:
78 degrees
200 watts of 5000 k light
0 ammonia
0 nitrite

I'm slowly stocking. I have incandescent hood but am using compact flourescent 60/40 and 60/40=200 watts (daylight-5000 k rating). Is this too much light? Can I go 40/40 and 40/40 and still get enough light? Also, how long should the light be on? I've seen 8-10 hours-is this enough? Thanks for your help!

Added plants on 6/21/11:
Italian Val (Vallisneria spiralis)-removed from tank (July 2011)

Banana Plant (Nymphoides aquatica)

Conditions:
0 ammonia
0 nitrite

Added on 7/1/2011:
1 gold gourami (dead July 2011 because ich)
1 blue gourami (dead July 2011 because ich)
2 clown loaches (dead July 2011 because ich)

Added 7/8/11:
2 clown loaches (dead July 2011 because ich)
Java Moss Ball (Vesicularia dubyana)
