Hi,
I got my tank used with two canister filters. The one is self priming and works great. The second however, is a Via Aqua 650, is not self priming and my boyfriend and I can't get it to prime to save our lives. The guy we bought it from had it working right before we picked it up.
I would really like to increase the filtration on my tank and it doesn't make sense to buy a new filter if this one will work.
I've tried these steps on this site:

I had minimal luck. We thought it work for a second, but no water was being pumped back into the tank. We've tried it with the tank full of water, with nothing being pumped out. We can hear the motor working, so I really don't know what to do. Is there a common part that breaks that I can replace to see if that's the problem?
Any help would be appreciated.
