Sponge filter cycling question

I'm setting up a tank for a holding female yellow lab cichlid and will use as a fry grow out tank. I have a sponge filter to use. Will beneficial bacteria grow on the sponge filter so it will cycle? If I add the sponge filter to an existing tank for a week or so then transfer it will that do the trick? Any suggestions?

Just leave the filter in the display tank for a couple off weeks to seed, then it's off into your QT.

Yes, all ten of my 40 breeders are run by air driven sponge filters.
