I bought a refractometer and to my surprise my swing was way off. It read 1.024. My refractometer read 1.031! Is this normal? Should I go off the refractometer reading?

If your refractometer is calibrated then go by that. Yes it is very normal for the swing arm to be off, I have a friend that has 2 of them and he gets different reading both are off compared to my refractometer.
Make use your refractometer is properly calibrated.

Just to jump on this one and reiterate what was above .......use your refractometer get rid of your swing arm. Make sure it is calibrated though and check this setting on a regular basis.
