Protein skimmers and filters.

I currently have a 40 gallon saltwater tank. I want to eventually have a decent amount of fish and move up in tank size to at least a 75 gallon if thatís big enough for triggers and puffers and tangs. Do you believe 75 gallon is enough? And For filtration do I need to have a protein skimmer or can I use those underwater Fluval U filters or something else in place of a protein skimmer, along with my canister filter thatís 360gph. Just looking to save $.

I'm not aware of any triggers that can be housed in anything under 100 gallons. Once you get above the size of tank you are currently working with, it is best practice to run a skimmer in tandem with another form of filtration. In my tank of about 120-ish gallons, run a skimmer, algae turf scrubber, and just recently added a small media reactor.

For those kinda fish youíre looking at 125-180 gallons imo as they really need 6ish feet of swimming area.
