I know sometimes it can be irregular but is there any rule to this?

The rule for livebearers is "When the females are ready, they give birth." They will need a secure place to release their fry so they can to some extent, resist birthing in hopes of finding the "right' place. They are totaly unpredictable for the most part. (If you read some of the material on breeding livebearers, you'll notice that the gestation periods extend by weeks for just this reason.)

Egglayers, on the other hand, can be a bit more predictable depending on the specie.

If you find a more predictable way or see your fish looking at the clock on the wall, please let us know :lol: LOL (Sorry, I couldn't resist :D)
