From those pics (although they are obviously stressed from shipping), and from much experience with rams, I can tell you with 100% certainty that you have a female (smaller fish) and male pair. I can also tell from those pictures that they are nice stock. You should be very pleased with what you received and I hope they work out for you.

I agree, looks like a m/f to me, if they are sticking close like I believe you said they were then they have likely paired up.

thanks everyone for all your help. they seem to be getting a little more comfortable in their new home. I got a few better pics of them today so thought I would add them here

Do me a favor and change out 20 gallons of water tomorrow and every other day for a total of three-four water changes. Also introduce a flat piece of slate angled at 45 degrees or so where the pair are hanging out near that decoration. Keep the temperature of the water about 80 degrees. See what happens after all of this and report back.

well i got me some shale (will that work?) and put it in the tank. not sure things are going to work out though - I am having water issues. for some reason i am spiking nitrite! uuugggghhhh! I thought I was cycled or I never would have put the rams in there!! I sure hope they are going to be ok. I did 3 big 50% PWCs today. we will see how things look tomorrow. pretty sure the nitrates are doing ok since I am doing all these PWCs. will check them tomorrow too.

Oh dang! Make sure with your PWC you are dosing enough Prime for the entire tank and not just the water you're adding. This will neutrialize the remaining nitrite for 24 hours. Also, I would rob some filter media from your 20 and add it to the 90.

yep -dosing for the whole 90 gallons.
and well, ummm, I already have extra media in there ;)

jsut did two back to backs and it is now down to .5ppm (y)

What I mean is by brining over more seeded media from another tank you're increasing your BB to help quickly end the mini cycle you are experiencing.

the 20 is still in a fish IN cycle so it will not be any help either. also, I think i have my filters stuffed with extra stuff already. not sure there is any more room in there for anything else - not that I have it...

thanks! i hope it really is a "mini" cycle and ends soon!

My pair were following each other around all the time and now the one I believe to be the male seems to be standing off a little and nudging the other but not pestering could this be courtship or possible same sex?

They're pretty easy to sex. If the black spot has blue sheen over it then it's female.

1st two pics of fish number 1
2nd two pics of fish number 2
See what sex you think they are

I thought so too but seems to have a slight blue sheen on the black dot but no black on the pelvic fins

Yeah, I'm seeing a blue sheen on both. If #2 is a male, it'll be the first male I've seen with blue on the black spot. Otherwise I would agree #1 is female and #2 is male.

Every pair I breed with looked this was as youngins lol

those are nice fish wilkes!

maybe I am learning something because I was going to say the same as everyone else!! So proud of me!!!

first one a girl, second one a boy

woo hoo! hope we are right :)

That's a relief you think this also, I'll see if the "female" is still playing kiss chase later today when I get in from work then. These fish are still very small I'd say about an inch so may maintain the blue tint for a while.
