Well I got tiger barbs in there now that I'm gonna keep in to cycle the filter! Or perhaps a cleaner like a bristlenose pleco. I was thinking maybe some of them. If not ill just switch em to the other tank. I'll give it a shot. And let you know how it goes if you're interested in hearing about it.

I will keep you updated on when my filter is in and cycled before I get my turtle indefinitely.

The barbs might be ok, again in not sure how aggressive musks are when it comes to tank mates but if your ok with loosing a fish here and there then by all means. I used to get my RES feeders all the time and then this overwhelming feeling of guilt came over me and I stopped getting feeders lol.

Haha yeah I had heard res turtles can just demolish fish. And yeah, I'm alright with it I think. I'm gonna try it when I can! Looks like my filter will be here Monday(hopefully) and I've got a little less than half my tank switched to sand. Gonna do the other half this week. And hopefully start cycling that new filter.

Pretty excited. Thanks for your help btw!

I honestly think you should be fine with your barbs let me know how everything goes. And I know I've said this a bunch of times already, but your bioload with the turtle and fish will be high and you NEED to stay on top of water changes. Turtles can withstand serious levels of toxicity, they are very hearty but it doesn't mean you should abuse that. Anyway not trying to patronize just sharing my experience with my RES. Anymore questions just fire away

Ohh yeah I know! I'll be on it! And okay I will.

Saw you tried to send me a message, I cleared out a few so you can try again

So I believe I will be getting a turtle this week! I'm pretty excited!

However yesterday I did a no no. I did a water change and shut off my old filter to see if my new eheim is fully cycled. (I should note I cleaned the mechanical and chemical(purigen) TWO weeks ago and the biomedia was just nasty dirty so I cleaned it in old tank water but I think it's full of bacteria)

It has now been 3 1/2 weeks with both filters running. When I shut off the old one I think it was bad to do so when doing a water change at the same time. Especially since my tap water has ammonia of .5

I did use prime of course. But when I came home
From work (7 hours later) the fish were gasping like there was an ammonia spike.

I emergency dosed it with prime immediately! And put the old filter back on.

However without its media!! And after it had dried out!! And the fish are totally fine 12 hours later.

Do you think I just caused a spike and it is cycled? It scared me. But seeing as it has no media in the old filter and it dried out completely I don't know if it had anything to do with it or not.

Sorry for the long post!

Yeah you caused a mini cycle, be removing the media from the old filter you removed a good amount of bacteria from the tank so the bioload temporarily overloaded the one filter. Just keep an eye on it but that's what it seems like happend.

Okay! Got a side question, do you think an air stone would help with this problem? Or will the eheim provide oxygen even without the surface agitation?

Yeah it was just a lack of oxygen. Problem resolved! I got the turtle Wednesday and he has been living with my barbs just fine!

He ate one of my snails yesterday which isn't a big deal it's actually one of the reasons I have snails!

Here's a picture of him! Thanks for your help!

Hey that's a good looking musk, I like your tank! Sorry I haven't replied I just got back from a cruise

Thanks!! I like him! I feed him separate from the tank because the tiger barbs love his turtle food no matter what I feed him. And he's too slow compared to them!

And it's okay! How was your cruise?! I'm jealous.

It was good I took the Norwegian Gem from NY to Bahamas. I think I'd like to try a different cruise line next time though. I'm glad I went but I'm not in a rush to go on another one, prefer an all inclusive resort.

Ah cool! Glad you had a good time. The last cruise I was on went to Cozumel Mexico and Costa Rica. Which was pretty cool, got to see the Mayan ruins! How did you like the Bahamas?

I've never been.

Really great time actually, snorkeling was the best part. But if your not on a resort it's a really impoverished area, quite awful to say the least. Then again the Caribbean is plagued with poverty, other than of course the multimillion dollar resort companies

Yeah I figured it was something like that!

Mexico, or at least the section I was in, was basically like that as well. I did a guided jeep off roading tour while I was down there.(great fun)

But you could really tell once we left the dock and resort area, it was really lower class/poverty areas.

Yeah it's pretty terrible, those areas just become extortion prone because their so poor. Land gets bought for next to nothing and they make millions off it. Resort prices are ridiculous, but you won't find a cheap paradise lol I wana go to bora bora some day but leme tell ya it's crazy expensive

Hey thanks!!

He is still shy around me, but he is getting more comfortable.

And the fish have completely adapted to him, no fear whatsoever. Lol

Mine still swims from me then trys to bite me when I get a hand on him. Watch out because they can stretch those necks to get their heads half way back on the shell.
