I very much agree that your proposed stock list is overstocked and really suggest you remember to look up the requirements of all your fish before deciding on them. Also, why not find out what is causing your algae rather than buy a pet only do to a job. Shorten your light time, double check your nitrates, really look into your fert regimen, doing this will hopefully help you find out what is causing your alage in the first place.

All my nitrates are in check, and I don't add any ferts yet
It might be the light, it's on from like 9:30- 12:30, like 15 hours

I'd say its your light duration...knock it down to 6-8 hours.
As for waiting for the tetras to die off, considering re-homing, trading, or selling them. Planning your stock around fish dying off is unpredictable. With proper care they should be around for several years. The gold tetras I have are at least 4-5 years old.

What does "nitrates are in check" mean exactly? When talking about algae this could mean a lot of things. And yes, my first guess would be that your lights are on way too long, and that there is an imbalance in your nutrient levels. Try to shoot for about 8 to 10 hours with the lights on, and while you still have algae shorten it even further to 4 to 6 hours. You can get a digital timer from Walmart for $6 to help with this. I suggest doing water tests daily or every other day to closely monitor your nutrients, there are suggested levels of nitrate, phosphate, gh/kh, and all the others that should help prevent algae in most setups. Using a certain fish to combat algae after it has occurred is a lot like using drastic medications to combat infections, its better to prevent than treat. Its always better to act than react.

haha ur funny do some research first the african leaf fish will eat all small fish hahaha ur funny and u should get an angelfish

We are not here to laugh at or belittle any of our members on AA. I would suggest that you remember that in your future posts.

Ok guys, update!

Right now I am changing from gravel to sand, very excited!
I got a Rubbermaid cooler that is around 15 gallons, filled it up, put the decor in, the fish, and the plants( by the way, it took me like 15 minutes to get 4 kuhli loaches out lol)
I put in my heater and a tube with a 10 gallon pump connected, creating the bubbles you guys see
You guys think this is a good sand? And here is the set up for the fish, do you guys think they will be ok there until tomorrow?
Thank you:) and thanks for keeping up!
Ps. That you see in the last pic is my filter media, I'm not going to change it
Also, I'm not getting root tabs or liquid ferts in minimum 2 weeks, maximum 3 weeks, will my plants be ok by then?
Thanks:)

That sand is really good and looks great as far as inert sand goes, that's what I used to have. Your plants will probably be fine, just test for you nitrates at least and keep them in the correct level. I laughed at the kuhli loach thing, try catching them in a 75 gallon, took forever.

Hah lol, I can't imagine catching that in a 75 gallon, lol, would probably take me over an hour
Thanks for keeping up! I'll post more pics as I'm advancing, just took out the gravel, a pin in the but as well but, oh well!

I asked Rivercats that same thing when I switched to sand, she said use it...... You re rinsing the sand in a bucket first, yes?

Yes I am rinsing it, about 20 rinses per 10 pounds :/ so I have to rinse 80 times:/
So I'm filling it 1/2 way with water and adding those bio magnet things, it's looking good! One bag in, one bag to go!

Ok guys! So just finished adding all the sand! In the nick of time! A storm is approaching!
It looks nice, looks kind of cloudy for now, I'll put the decor in right now, I'm filling it half way, and putting in the bio magnet

Yay guys! I added it 1/2 way, and it's not even cloudy! Almost clear!
I want to add the bio magnet though, should I add my filter in already?

Any idea how long it took me to read this whole thread ? I love your enthusiasm loach boy, it's refreshing, reminds me of me at your age.

If you get Otos, can I offer a little advice for when you do ? Try to get them after they have been in the store tanks for at least a week, and longer is better. They are lovely little fish, very entertaining, and sure do eat algae. But they are caught wild using cyanide to stun them, which is pretty common, actually. Then they don't get fed for awhile. They rely on bacteria in their guts to digest their algae for them and these die off while they are held. So when they get to a store, they are starving, but even if they eat, they might die, as the bacteria take a long time to grow back.

So if you wait, the weakest ones will, sadly, die. Then the strongest ones will be left, and you will have a better chance that they will live. Try to go at feeding time, see which ones are eating the algae tabs, because some don't learn to eat them. Get the guys who are eating and have fat bellies. They like their own company, so 3 is the very least you should keep. One will be very lonely indeed.

And also, reconsider those dwarf gouramis. The one you lost, that's very common and it is not likely caused by anything you did. It's very common for these fish to die suddenly for no apparent reason. Might be inbreeding, might be, who knows ? They can be quite shy, prefer heavy plant coverage, on top and in the substrate, slow to no water current, and while they are very, very pretty, I don't think they are good fish for beginners or for community tanks. Some have good luck with them, but many do not. Just something to think about.

When it's time for fish, make sure to look up the needs of each fish type you are thinking of. Some have needs, for size, or food or company, that make them less suitable as community fish. I happen to love loaches, especially the kuhli types. Black ones I find, are quite outgoing and often are seen, swimming up and down and around, so I like them a lot. Otos will also swim all over the place and so long as there are not too many of them, will get along quite well. Though classed as bottom feeders, Otos really feed anywhere they can find something. Black kuhli loaches do stay down to feed. I also keep cories with loaches, and so far, no problems, but I make sure to drop food in two or three places so they all get a share.

Wish you much success and pleasure with your project. I hope it all turns out just the way you want.

Ok Guys, so I'm done!

I finished, I think it looks very nice, worth the trouble, and the best part is that the water is not cloudy at all, very clear, I mean it's cloudy but not so much
Here are the pics, I wanted to take pics if my fish as I haven't updated in a while, but I saw a giant cockroach in my bedroom, and I killed it, and quickly decided to go grab some poison and start putting it everywhere, every corner, Avery wall, under my bed, in all my room, so I couldn't take pics if everything, just of my catfish, will post more pics tomorrow
