I have varied chiclids in my community tanks these include bolivian rams, angel fish, and firemouths all of which get on fine. However are you looking at african chiclids like the lake malawi if so I think you will find most can be very boisterous. lots of luck

As brianNY says it is not the capacity of the tank but the surface area you need to take into consideration. If you are looking at platies, I do not believe that an extra one would make much difference especially if you have an air stone in the tank. as it is the oxygen content of the water...

if there is any current on the top of the tank, try making a loop with a piece of airline, joined with a tee piece and fix the tee piece to a sucker. you can then anchor the ring any where you want in the tank. I tried this with good results. lol

I have two makes of canister filters in my tanks, and I found my fluval 303 a pain in the butt when cleaning. My preference is the eheim as it is much easier to maintain. lots of luck.
