Keeping bacteria alive and my tank cycled with no fish.

It looks like everything worked. I just fed my empty tank flakes with my auto feeder. I had no ammonia or nitrites. I had about 40 ppm nitrates. I did a good water change before I left, so if there were no bacteria in the tank, we'd expect there to have been a high level of ammonia, but...

    Neon Tetras!

The only day I saw my keyhole cichlids be aggressive was the day I tried to put neons in the tank. I put in a school of 7 neons, and the keyholes immediately ate 3 before I could get the other 4 out and take them back to the store.

Anyone know why types of plants would be best? I was thinking that java moss might work well.

    My favorite aquarium add-ons...

I was terribly unimpressed with the Whisper I had. It was very noisy. I replaced it with an Aquaclear that was much quiter.

"Low" means about 15 ppm here because it comes out of the tap at 10 to 15 ppm.

Questions about 10 gallon refugium thingy for 55 gallon tank

Sometimes. There are two problems with that. First, sometimes I'm called away on short notice. Second, on occasion even if the nitrate level is very low, it gets pretty high by the time I get back. That's why I was thinking of planting a small tank to help get rid of the nitrates.

Questions about 10 gallon refugium thingy for 55 gallon tank

I have a 55 gallon African cichlid tank that sometimes has somewhat high levels of nitrate (about 40 ppm to 50 ppm) because I occasionally have to be out of town for a week or so and miss my weekly partial water change. I have a 10 gallon tank that I was thinking of turning into a sort of...

Keeping bacteria alive and my tank cycled with no fish.

I think I'll just have my auto feeder dump a little flake in there and see whether that works out.

Cichlid Stocking Advice for a 29 Gallon Tank

have an empty 29 gallon tank that I'd like to stock with African cichlids. I'd like to have at least 4 or 5 fish. So that means bigger cichlids are out. I'm also not a big fan of fish that doesn't get larger 3" or 3.5". I'd like to find something in the 4" to 5.5" range or so. Anyone have any...

Keeping bacteria alive and my tank cycled with no fish.

I bought an auto feeder a while back because I was originally only supposed to be gone 2 weeks. I can use it to feed the tank. How much do you think I need to use? Less than I would feed the fish?

Keeping bacteria alive and my tank cycled with no fish.

I have to be away from my tank for about a month. I've already found a home for my fish. Right now there are no fish in my tank. How can I keep the tank cycled while I'm gone so I don't have to start the cycling process all over when I get back?
