Sorry I didn't reply sooner. Computer is on the fritz.
I plan on adding the following to the tank.
Ps Demasoni - 4; Ps Flavus - 2; Labidochromis sp "red Top Kimpuna" - 4
Labidochromis sp "Hongi" - 3;
So if I understand the whole wet/dry filter slash sump thing.... The overflow only works so long as the pump is "pumping" the water back into the tank. The water pump "pumps the water" into the overflow. Does that sound right?
If I change substrate I will do it when I set up my wet/dry filter. I will put some of the crushed coral in the bottom of the sump. I will also keep about half of the coral in the bottom of the tank as well as the new substrate.
I have a substrate of crushed coral. But if they substrate were black would the cichlids color up better? I already regulate their diet to help them color up and it has indeed worked. But I keep them for color and personality and their personality is excellent. Now I would like more color.
Can you recommend a pump? Will I need to get a pump around 600 gph and is adjustable? I ask because it seems I don't want a pump that will empty the sump faster than it will fill up.
I have a wet/dry as I said. I stopped by a lfs yesterday and they quoted me $70.00 for an overflow box! What is that?! For some plexiglass?! I am in the wrong business! Where can I find one cheap?

You could also try calling your lfs and see if they will give you some water or gravel. Maybe even sell it. You never know. It would speed up the cycle time. BUT fishless cycling is the way to go. Don't subject fish to that kind of up and down water quality.
I would go with an Eheim filter. I have a Fluval 404 on my 125 and it does a great job BUT it is a pain in the backside seating area to get going after I clean it up. The Eheim I had on my 75 was a great filter and was easy to get going. An Eheim 2215 would be fine for your 55, overfilter it...
Before I moved I had a Fluval 404 and a HOT 250 and a Penguin 330. Now I have 3 330's and the HOT 250. I have not set up the 404 but will this afternoon after work. This many filters is temporary. I have a wet/dry that was given to me. I am going to clean it up real well and set it up next...
The cichlids I lost were pretty aggressive. Well some were anyway. My Maylandia greshakei was pretty dominant. There was no doubt the tank was his. My johanni was fairly calm. I had a pair of auratus that were stone cold killers. I lost 4 fish in 2 days after I put them in. MEAN is an...
Price comparison at www.bigalsonline.com if you want to shop online. GREAT prices and if you order on wednesday evening/Thursday you get double points for every $$.
Filter-Eheim 2217-Pricey, but you get what you pay for! OR Fluval 404-Have one and it works fine
200 watt heater should be fine...
I just moved and lost ALL my fish. :( Some of which I have had a LONG time. :( I have had Mbuna since the beginning and I've decided to get some cichlids that I have not kept before. BUT I was wondering with the following stock list, is there an Mbuna, or a Malawi Cichlid that will "play...
If I was stocking a 70 gallon, I would go with a couple of Labidochromis Careleus and a couple of Ps Demasoni. It would give you some yellow and blue and black. If you wanted some red MAYBE a couple of Labidochromis sp "Red Top Kimpuna". That'll throw in some red as well. I wouldn't put more...
