    Snail Killers For Community Tanks

I was surprised to find that Rosy Barbs completely gobbled up my snails. They seem to eat the tiny (~2mm) ones--there are a few large (>1cm) ones left but they're not a problem.

Causes of and solutions for clown loach shyness

I kept clown loaches in my 55 gal for years and they get a lot less shy with time. A group of comfortable, settled-in Clown Loaches can be rather obnoxious, uprooting plants, digging, and chasing other species just for fun. They got almost tame, splashing, clicking, and begging for food when...

    Jordanella Floridae demolishes duckweed

I didn't mean to imply they ONLY ate duckweed. If you want to grow anything other than tough/bad tasting(?) plants like cryptocoryne, anubias, java fern, these little guys will probably demolish your plants. Mine eat hairy green algae, duckweed, wisteria, something called "Aluminum Plant", and...

    6 rosy barbs munch tails

All my 6 rosy barbs do is munch on each other's tails. These guys (3 male, 3 female) looked peaceful enough in the 10 gallon in the store, but they do nothing but chew on tail in my tank. It's a 20 gallon with lots of plants. They're all about 1 inch long. I've had them for a week and it does...

    Jordanella Floridae demolishes duckweed

If anyone wants to get rid of ALL their duckweed, put these guys in your tank. They eat it like flake food. There's a lot of duckweed growing in Florida so I guess they're familiar with it.

Myth: Goldfish have shorter life spans in warmer waters.

The claim that goldfish do not live as long in 80F+ water seems reasonable to me. The diseases, parasites, and water chemistry are different than those in a temperate region, the environment to which millions of years of natural selection has adapted the goldfish. Large domesticaed animals...

    kribs really aren't that peaceful

Kribensis has been too unpredicatble to be a good community fish in my tanks, too. A really big tank with lots of plants and things to hide in is all I can think of to suggest.

    Problems with Jordanella Floridae

I do feed them algae wafers. And flakes. And they demolish the anacharis and wisteria anyway. The few I have are the only ones I've seen in a pet shop since 10 yrs+ so unless I go swimming in a spring I don't think I'll be seeing any more. (Swimming in freshwater is generally a bad idea in...

can't find fish in west central florida!

I've been in and out of the hobby for about 20 years and I've noticed that the variety of fish species at aquarium shops, at least in the Tampa Bay area, has drastically decreased. There are about 5 shops within 20 miles of my house and it's great, if you only want live bearers, the easiest...

    Problems with Jordanella Floridae

I don't think mine are too crowded: 2 males in a 20 gal tank with lots of plants. What's ARLC? It's not on the list of common abbreviations.

    Platy Problem

Are you keeping the platy in hard, brackish water? Most pet stores don't bother to, but you really ought to if you want the fish to thrive. Your platy may be weakening because of stress from prolonged exposure to improper water conditions. I see from your post that you have loaches with them...

    Problems with Jordanella Floridae

I am beginning to see why aquarium shops rarely have these fish. This fish leads to unhappy customers. Especially when aquarium books by Herbert Axlerod call them "peaceful." These new aquarium books really annoy me when they have all pictures and only icons to tell you about how to care for...

    Red-tailed v/s Red-finned Black Sharks?

The red-finned shark is also called rainbow shark? Black with all red fins? I had one of those for years when I was a kid. A robust fish that does not like members of its own species or related species. One to a tank, unless you have a very big tank. I think they are fin nippers. Red-tailed...
