Yes plants absorb calcium. However I believe this is vastly overestimated since i have never actually heard of abone having an issue. I certainly havent and my water is soft out the tap anyway. Plus one of my tanks has an enourmous piece of driftwood.

I use tap only. There is alot of evidence that this method will work. I usually put a small amout of crushed coral in my tank to sdd calcium.

Yes that is true. You can still use a conventional filter though (I do). It adds alittle more difficulty if you do a filterless setup.

That is a misconception. "Self sustaining" tanks dont need lots of algae. Mine has very little if any. Its all about balance :)
