With a fine sand, 1-1.5" deep, you won't have to plunge the python into it the way you do with larger sand/gravels. Detritus doesn't get down into it, it just lays on top. Holding the python about 1/2" above the sand, and kind of swishing in back and forth over the detritus will float it up...
I bought that for my 90! I really liked the look, but alas, my acrylic tank's openings weren't big enough. I had to return it. It did fit in the 36-inch-wide 65-gallon, but did't look as good as it did in the 48-inch width...

Are you sure your intake tube is fully seated in the notch atop the motor inside the filter? If it gets bumped up a bit, it might lose the prime.
Secondly, the impeller may have broken and not spinning properly. When I am reassembling after cleaning, I always fill filter with tap water and...
