Does it always have to be 0 for an ammonia reading? When I test my water, it's always hard to tell if the API test is coming uo 0 or .25. The shading is hard to read. If it's .25 is that harmful for the fish?
I probably will go with just a Betta.
But it is funny how I get lots of comment from people who are telling me 3 fish in this tank would be cruel and yet some of these people have given advice to people on doing a cycle with fish recommending getting a few hardy fish to cycle your tank & some...
There is another example of different opinions. I've had moderators on 2 different fish forum sites saying the plan I had (& I did emphasize that it will be a planted aquarium with 2 or more water changes & gravel cleaning each week) and both said that this plan should be OK. (BTW the Julii...
I'm only saying that everyone has seems to have different opinions on the hobby and how to maintain tanks. I've been reading many sites and read many books since I started and one thing I've seen there is a million contradictory opinions. As an example, some sites say you should keep the fish...
I am a newbie and am currently doing a fishless cycle on my 5 gallon tank. You will find a lot of opinions here saying that you can only put 1 fish in a tank this size. There are some who have more than that and have said that they have done well. I think you could do a few small fish as long as...
It will be just a Betta tank. Everyone is telling me that it is too small too add the platy and molly I was planning also, so it will be just 1 betta and a snail.
Here is my new 5 gallon hex tank, currently being cycled. All 3 objects in it were found at the thrift store for a total cost of $6

I have the API Testing kit. Do you run the low PH & high PH tests together. The bottles don't say "bottle #1 & bottle #2" so I'm thinking you don't use both bottles together. If the color doesn't match anything on the chart with one does that mean the other one is the true reading of PH?
Showing images on posts?
How does everyone get to show their photos in these posts? When I tried inserting image all it asked for was the URL link. But when I put in the link when post all it show was the link printed out not the image.
Sorry to be a bother, but someone else on these boards said I shouldn't even worry about the PH till I'm ready to add fish. Also someone else said 4.0 is too much ammonia for a 5 gallon tank and that I should get it down to 1.0. Should I do a large water change 50% to get it down? Or will it go...
