Wanting to start a temperate marine tank

I would need a chiller go sure. I read something about needin to create algae blooms to feed inhabitants. This sounds like something that I might not be ready for. I only have experience with a 25# sw tank with heart predators. As much as I want a Goldwater it sounds like I would probably fail...

Wanting to start a temperate marine tank

I'd like to start a temperate marine tank, and have no idea where to start. What are some dos and donts starting one. How does it differ from a tropical tank? I'd like to do this because I live near the coast in northern California and do lots of freediving/spearfishing/abalone diving, and I...

    Heater almost killed fish

Ok I will get a new one, sounds much easier and safer. What's the average I can expect to pay for a heater for a 25 gal?

    Heater almost killed fish

Well my tank is already established. It was staying at the perfect temperature all summer but now that it's cooling down I need it. This is what I have, I can't tell how to turn it on or off, or set it to a specific temperature.

    Heater almost killed fish

I have a Thermo Q submersible heater. I turned it on and when I came back I noticed my moray eel freaking out, a quick check of the water showed over 90 degrees. How do you work these things? It's just a tube with a little nob that doesn't really move. If this is the thermostat how do you set...

    HOLY! ?? What is this???

Thank you! I also found a clam and in a few places there is this weird white slimey puffy thigns on my LR. Don't know what it is, it's not snail eggs. All harmless for a FOWLR lion/snowflake eel?

    HOLY! ?? What is this???

I found a couple of these small slug looking things on some base rock in my saltwater tank, I poked one and it started flashing bright neon colors?! What are these things?? The one I poked maybe had a shell, but it looked similiar to the pics of these other ones I took. I also found this...

    Parasitic mites?

Thanks. I asked the LFS guy and he said it sounded like harmless copepods. After scrubbing the sides it's a day later and I don't see them anymore. I don't have any corals just a few button polyps on LR .What is SPS, I googled it and all that came up was small penis syndrome, lol.

    Parasitic mites?

I just got back from a week long vacation and noticed two things. First there is what appears to be mold growing above the water on the sides. Second there are hundreds of tiny red brown round bugs moving on the sides of the tank. Are these some sort of parasite, or just some type of zooplankton...

My tank IS cycled( I guess, please help)

Thank you for all the answers! I thought about a cheap temporary skimmer but the guy at the LFS says there aren't many options for cheap with the way my acryclic tank is built. The top has edges that go in pretty far and only one area for a HOB filter.

My tank IS cycled( I guess, please help)

Well that's good to hear my biofilter is established and doing its' job. I feed every other day, or every third day. I do not have a skimmer. I do a 25% water change every week, or every other week, depending on how things are looking. (like ammonia). I just got the nitrate and nitrite tests so...
