Try what Grant said, find a few good books And reccomend them or buy them and send them to your in-laws. You shouldn't be the only one doing all the research. Also like previously mentioned, his parents may not listen to you anyway, afterall you are just kids to them. Good Luck!
A lot of people start their set up with fish. But I wouldn't be to happy about having to teach them everything long distance. I would tell your husband to find a good LFS and have them teach his family what to do. Or like Michael said...Give them this web site to learn what to do next.
I always just kept them far enough from other coral that may sting them. I also found that most of mine set up their own boundries. They would sting the corals that got too close and that set the boundries.
Have You thought about threatening and taking him to small claims court? With just the threat, maybe he'll just give you the right sump for the tank instead of having to put one together or buy another one. I would bet the courts would rule against him since he told you the sump went with that...
Instead of plastic plant check out the silk plants, they look more realistic. As far as a live plant that doesn't need extreme light that I've had success with...the Anabus. Mine does great and I don't have special lighting, just a Triton Bulbs and I don't give it special care.
I had a yellow tang in a 30 gal tank and it did just fine. Just make sure he can swim back and forth across the tank. I also had clown fish and cleaner shrimp and never had any problems with them. I really believe your algea problem is just lighting. Get better lights and I think your tank will...
I had ordered a VHO Light set up and it worked great. I had a double bulb set up and used one Aqua sun bulb and one super actinic bulb. It made the tank look great, and the corals and fish did great under them. As for the heater you probably need at least a 150 W heater. The Ebo-jagger makes a...
I know how you feel, I went thru that a couple years back and I started up a 29 gal reef. I loved the reef, but I missed my freshwater tank and now I'm doing freshwater again. I have a 20 gal freshwater with plants and I'm glad I did it. Also after you have a saltwater tank and you see how much...
I have a friend who has a 29 filled with Cardinal and they are beautiful. She also has live plants and it's nice to watch them swim in and out of the plants. They're colorful and peaceful. Good Luck with whatever you decide to do.
The bowfront looks nicer, but the 55 gives your fish more swimming room. I have to agree with the others if you have the option pay a few dollars more and get the 75.
