I think you will be fine. In fact, I didn't know you were supposed to use an airstone. I did a 3.5 day blackout last week, and didn't use an airstone. My tank was moderately planted, and I used a layer of towels and a layer of blankets to cover it up.

So there may be no "perfect" solution. I am thinking of doing a DIY hood using 2 18" bulbs, and just have them overlap in the middle. Then I could over-drive them and get some decent light.

I'm having trouble finding lights for a 20 gallon long tank, which is 30" in length. The trip to home depot yielded and abundance of 18", 24", and 36" lights. Do I need to settle for 24"? I know they make 20L/29 gallon hoods, are there really 30" bulbs in there, or just 24" with 3" dead spots on...
