    sump water return problem

Fixed it I took my siphon canister off and checked every part of it. The dual lines that return the water to the sump were totally clear and I could find no cracks. Turned out that the air extraction port on the top of the siphon canister was blocked, so the AquaLifter was sucking hard but...

    sump water return problem

I have a 65-gal tank with a sump filter below, which houses the protein skimmer and return pump. I have a hang-on-back siphon return canister with dual large-diameter return hoses routing the water into the sump filter itself. I use an AquaLifter siphon pump to suck the air out of the siphon...

What is this critter? Some kind of worm?

It's not a bristle worm I found pics of bristle worms online - don't look anything like this critter.

What is this critter? Some kind of worm?

I found this critter inside my sump filter sack, while rinsing it. I think it's some kind of worm. Turned out there were quite a few of them on the inside of the filter, a couple larger than this one. They ranged from 1/2" to 3/4", curled like this. They all appeared dead, probably from the hot...

Planning to protect tank during fumigation

I need to get my house fumigated for termites. I've looked at the alternative treatments, and none of them can really guarantee killing all the termites. My tank is too big to move, and I don't have a safe place to temporarily house my fish, live rock, etc. So I guess I'm going to cover the...

My expensive LED light fixture died too soon

I got a Marineland Reef-Capable LED light fixture (24" size) for my tank in July 2011. I loved the way it lit my tank, and it may be what encouraged yellow colony polyps to start growing in my tank. But this fixture died last week! I called the manufacturer, and the nice customer service rep...

Need advice on heater & air pump

Re: my questions on aqualifter and heater I don't know what brand my siphon overflow cannister is. It's about 8" wide, with a small chamber that sits in the tank and a large chamber that hangs off the back, with the siphon passage connecting them; both chambers and the siphon passage are the...

Need advice on heater & air pump

I have a 65-gal tank with a sump filter in the compartment below it. I have a siphon overflow chamber that hangs on the back of the tank and takes the water down to the sump. This chamber depends on maintaining a siphon to get the water over the rim of the tank and into the chamber's return...

Pls help me ID these critters on my LR

Thanks for the ID's Thanks, Flreefer, for IDing these critters. I found several articles & threads on yellow colony polyps - apparently very popular but prone to getting out of control & taking over too much of tank real estate. Someone suggested a simple siphon method to control their...

Pls help me ID these critters on my LR

I have a 65-gal FOWLR tank with lots of LR that's been in the tank since I set it up 7 or 8 yrs ago. I have three types of critters growing on my LR, only one of which I've ID'd. I've attached a close-up photo that shows examples of all three. 1. Yellow ball sponge - you can see one in the left...

    Light fixture questions - LED?

I've been using a Current fluorescent fixture in my 65-gal FOWLR tank. It has two bulbs, one white, other blue-white, and has worked fine, though it tends to cause the tank to be too warm in summer months (I know, I could reduce the lights-on hours). Yesterday it quit - I haven't tested it...

Interesting critters on my live rock

I have a 65-gal FOWLR tank that has been stable for several years now. Recently I noticed some interesting inhabitants on my live rocks: 1. Yellow ball sponges - about a half dozen, all (that I can see) on one rock. 2. Little (apparent) filtering worms that extend white filtering fronds ~...

    Tank safe during fumigation?

I read several threads where people sealed their tanks during fumigation, didn't lose any fish. Most ran a PH with an outside air line. That would be hard, long line run, hard to seal. I'm wondering whether oxygen depletion would be significant in the 3-day treatment.

    Tank safe during fumigation?

I'm looking at doing termite treatment for my house, and it seems the most dependable treatment is fumigation using sulfuryl fluoride. Moving my tank would be an incredible hassle, even if I had a place to keep it temporarily. I've seen some discussions where people just covered their tanks...

Setting up a sump filtration system - siphon?

aeration, salt splash So, aeration good, salt splash bad. On my tank I have an additional lid that I've cut to surround the various tubes as closely as practical. I do get salt build-up on the top surface of the tank and the back, but none on the front. I am somewhat concerned about salt...

Setting up a sump filtration system - siphon?

Re: large overflow cannister for my tank I did wonder about its size, and particularly its dual outlet flex hoses. I'm sure I could have done fine with a smaller outlet cannister; guess this is what the LFS guy had. I have a Rio 17 pump for the return, which I've plumbed with a "Y" to dual...

Setting up a sump filtration system - siphon?

I am setting up a sump filtration system for my 65-gal FOWLR tank. I have a CPR CS102 overflow cannister to control the water delivery to the sump. I have all the plumbing set up, but am undecided on how to handle the siphon in the overflow cannister. The instructions that came with the CS102...

Cleanup crew for 65-gal FOWLR tank?

I have a 65-gal tank with lots of LR and four fish, and only a few snails left from last batch I got > a year ago. I'm getting ready to order more snails, but wonder if it would be helpful to get some other cleanup critters - crabs, starfish, cuke, whatever. I've heard mixed comments on crabs...

    Nori source?

Nori roasted/toasted >>You don't want roasted nor toasted (really the same thing) since nutrients are stripped during the processing of either.<< Good point. I'll try to find some that is just dried. Thanks, Innovator. - Bob

    Nori source?

Roasted nori Ah, so roasted is not a show-stopper for nori. Maybe I'll look a little harder for a local asian market.
