    Food For Bottom Feeders

Do you try to drop them in at night after lights out? That works for my cories and my otherwise pushy, piggy rainbows.

    ideas for low/no tech tank

Thanks, waterpond. Do you keep all of these types, or just the crypts and the ambulia? Do you have upgraded lighting at all? I only have the 2 15 watt bulbs that came with my 55g, and I don't have any plans to upgrade any time soon.

    ideas for low/no tech tank

Hi al...I'm going to be planting my tank for the first time and am looking for ideas from some of you who are using just the standard lights that came with your tank (no upgrades), no CO2, no ferts, etc. Just basic, easy stuff. I realize I can only probably keep java moss, some anubias &...

    lighting problem

Yesterday when I turned on the lights in my tank one of them was very weak, almost not on at all. I figured since they are a year old it was time to replace them. So I bought some new ones today, but when I turned them on, I have the same problem. Does this sound like the ballast has gone...

    Question about driftwod

Squeekness, the reptile wood is most likely grapewood. I bought a piece of it, thinking I could substitute it for the Malaysian driftwood which is more expensive. It never did sink, and after a while, a white fungus started growing on it. I've heard other people say this happened to them too...

does sand substrate bother a snail?

oh okay. He's a gold mystery snail. Glad to hear he'll be alright. Now my betta seems a little too interested though...

does sand substrate bother a snail?

I never thought about it before I bought one, but now he's here and the sand is clumping onto all his sticky bits. looks painful. Is it harmful?

Can't believe the fish bag used in lfs and used for so long!

I had that happen when I bought some tiny little cories. The girl set the bag down and one of their tails got caught in the corner. He wiggled free, but his WHOLE tail came off! Right up to the peduncle! It eventually grew back, but is now misshapen. It's the only way I can tell him apart...

    need some opinions, please...

Thanks! And did you get the standard blue that they sell at places like Petsmart, etc? Like what they have as the background in their own tanks?

    need some opinions, please...

I'm changing the tank background to a solid color, but cant decide between blue or black. I have a 10g with a betta (black with red and dark blue fins) and some neons. I don't want the neons colors to be washed out by the blue background, but don't want to lose the betta against the black...

How long do black skirt tetras live?

yes, I think so. They are one of my favorites, even if they ARE very common.

How long do black skirt tetras live?

Okay this is a freaky, sad coincidence! I asked this question yesterday because I was watching my biggest one and he seemed to be moving a little slower than the rest. This morning I woke up and he was dead. I'm so bummed! I've gotten quite attached to these guys in the last year. I guess...

How long do black skirt tetras live?

I have had my black skirts for a year now, and they were already 4 yrs old when my coworker gave them to (forced them upon) me. Is this unusual? How long do these guys live, anyway??

do mystery or apple snails eat algae?

I need something to eat algae in my 10g betta tank, but I don't seem to have luck with ottos. Will snails do this?

    please help me decide....

thanks, everyone! Praecox it is! I already have six Boesemans. and the Parkinsoni looks too similar IMO.

    please help me decide....

Turquoise or Praecox rainbows? I'm getting ready to order some from liveaquaria.com, but have never seen either up close and in person, except for the pale watered down specimens in Petsmart. In your opinion, which is the most blue and colorful?

Where am I supposed to plant the java moss?

Thanks! What I'm looking for is a carpet effect. If anyone out there has ever driven through Georgia in the summer and seen the kudzu draping the trees, rocks, buildings, practically everything that doesn't move, you know what I mean. Are there any other low light plants that would work as...

Where am I supposed to plant the java moss?

I have a 55g and a 10g, both with the original light hoods that came with them when purchased. I would like to try growing some java moss (is this possible with these crummy lights?) but I have absolutely no vision, and don't have a clue where it is supposed to be planted. The substrate is...

    filter problem

It is a Top Fin (came with tank set-up). I got iit nine months ago, and it doesn't make any abnormal noises. Not sure what you mean by completely disassembling it- I have taken the intake tube out and it was not clogged, emptied the water out of the chambers, and they weren't clogged either...

    filter problem

My filter keeps backing up and spilling dirty water back into the tank from the spot where the intake tube goes in. I have changed the filter pads (thinking they were worn out) and dumped the water out of the filter ( to see if there was any large gunk in there-- there wasn't) It was fine for...

does anyone have pics of what is possible to achieve?

Hi everyone! I have a tank that has been set up for almost a year, furnished with resin rocks, fake plants, sand substrate, etc. I'm bored with it. I love the look of planted tanks, but have neither the money or the knowledge to mess with CO2, upgraded lighting, etc. Does any one have pics...

    which medication for sick fish?

I have some rainbows I just recently bought and have quarantined them. I have noticed their poo is white and stringy, which leads me to believe it is an internal parasite or internal bacterial infection. Does anyone know how to tell the difference and what kind of medicine and where I can find...

Wardley Tubifex Worms - Stick to tank???

yeah, if you squish em onto the glass they'll stick ...but only for a little while and then they'll pop off and float around the tank

    Grapevine for Driftwood?

I asked a similar question on here a few days ago. The answer was no, grapewood is not safe for your tank. It rots and is prone to a white fungus. You can find safe drifwood at Big Al's online though.

making driftwood safe for my pleco

thanks, plecoperson. that would be helpful. Petco only had this particular type, and I'm having a difficult time finding something safe that will give him something to rasp on and provide shade.
