    green water

From the photos and descriptions, I believe it's a green algae bloom. And despite the tank having no issues in the past, I'm still thinking being that close to a window is a likely contributor. Tannin leaching is usually clear and as far as I am aware (someone may correct me) rarely produces a...

    Fishless cycling uncertainity

Sounds like it's supposed to. :)

    never tried live plants before

I've used internal filters, hang on back filters and canister filters on tanks with pool sand. Never had any issues at all with any of them.

Do I need an algae eater?

After 24 hours if there's any left overs I scoop it out. It gets mushy and beaks down. Usually twice a week. And on other days I'll throw in 1/2 an algae tab to supplement the algae already in the tank. Although if there's a bit in there and i haven't cleaned it out in a bit I don't bother with...

Betta jumped up & nibbled my finger! :-)

Hahaha :) I don't allow my husband anywhere near my tanks. This arrangement suits us both. I had a Betta who became quite happy to float and nuzzle (if I can call it that) into my hands when I cupped them together just below the surface. No training. He was just a charmer. Happened entirely by...

    Fishless cycling uncertainity

After the PWC, consider taking the Ammonia up to 4ppm which I find to be the sweet spot during fishless cycle process.

    Question about light in tank

Yes. Should look rather awesome I should think.

    Day 10 no nitrates

Ahhh patience. An essential but elusive attribute during the cycle. Do note that 'around a week' is typical but every tank/experience is different. I had one of my tanks not show up Nitrite for closer to two weeks rather than the 8-10 days I would normally see. Stay the course :)

Do I need an algae eater?

I cut a slice of zucchini and put it into my tank for the ottos. They love it :)

    green water

Oh never mind. I just saw from the title it's green cloudy. Stupid iPhone covering the titles :) Sounds like an algae bloom to me. Does it look like pea soup? I had the same issue when my tank was near a window even though it didn't get direct sunlight. I fixed it by moving the tank to a spot...

    Should I upgrade filter ASAP?

Even if the cartridges don't fit, and they indeed may not, take out the brown gunk-laden pads, noodles and whatever else you have in there and just stuff it into the new filters on top of all the new filter & pads and other what not that comes with the new filter :) You'll be shoving a lot in...

    Nitrite levels

0.5ppm for either Ammonia or Nitrite is the upper limit you want to see before problems start. Both are very toxic and if your reading get any higher, your fish will become harmed. Recommend an immediate 30% PWC and test again. Safe levels are 0ppm and once your tank has finished cycling...

Man have things changed in last 30 years!

I still use buckets for my smaller tanks :) But i cheat and use a barrel with pond pumps for my larger tank. Welcome!

    Should I upgrade filter ASAP?

When ever you upgrade tanks and filters, you always run the risk of a mini-cycle but you're better placed when you have live bacteria-infested filter media. Which you do, despite the readings you're seeing. I prefer a bit of more filtration than what's generally recommended. IMO I'd rather be...

    Nitrite levels

PWCs remove nitrites. And i haven't read your other posts, so I assume you are in a cycle. If that is the case then change enough water to bring it down to 0.25ppm or less. Nitrites are toxic to all fish. If you reading gets to 0.5ppm or higher, change out water. What are your readings for...

Would a honey gourami get along with male platies?

They are similar I'll give you that. I had both, not at the same time though in my 15g quite a while back. This is just my own personal experience talking but they just got too aggressive when I had too many which perhaps has given my the impression that they like a bit o turf to themselves...

    fish stuck in filter intake

Awww, i can imagine. So sorry this has happened. It's never fun when this like this happens with the young one quite distraught. But if you have the means, upgrade. It would be best outcome for your daughter and for your remaining Molly. And never be concerned about asking for advice here...

Would a honey gourami get along with male platies?

Yes that tank is far too small for a Gourami, sorry. The only Gourami you might consider would be a Dwarf Gourami but you wouldn't want any other fish with it. They prefer a little space that they can rule over and it's just there in the 10g.

    Cloudy Water?

From what you've said, can't help with a diagnosis, sorry. But in any case, the usual response to a bacterial bloom or an outbreak of algae should make it less ugly to look at. Do a series of large PCWs over a one and a half - two week period. Do 70% on day 1, 30% day 2, 70 day 3 and that...

    Test readings GH/KH?

I can't say I would recommend baking soda to maintain your parameters unless you are quite experienced and know what you're doing. That stuff can make what was previously a stable tank quite unstable. You're better off with crushed coral in the filter which will alter your parameters in a less...
