    new tank question

The cycling thing, I tend to over think it. I have an established (over a year) 100 gallon setup. I'm setting up a much smaller tank (55 gallon) and have that full of 100lbs dry rock and aragonite sand. I put 20lbs of the cured live rock from the existing 100 gallon tank into this 55...no die...

    Anemone split

Been a while since I've posted on here. The 100 gallon reef is doing great. I bought a BTA Anemone about 4 months ago and it was quite small...about the size of a golf ball. Weekly feeding of fresh shrimp and LED lighting and it grew very rapidly to about the size of a small softball. I came...

    cracked sump help!

with all pumps off the sump is about 80% full of water, at running level it's more like 60% full. I'll go with silicone and see how it reacts. I've read to let it set for 48 hours before adding water, is that true or can I give it 12-24 hours instead so I can get the sump running again? thanks

    cracked sump help!

I did something stupid, I lifted up my external pump to put something under it so dampen some of the noise without disconnecting it and I now have a crack from the bulkhead up to the top of the sump. I got the water out before a huge mess was made but now want to know if I can fix it with...

    External Pump Noise

I know you're not supposed to run them dry, we ran it for about 10 seconds dry, outside of the stand, sitting on carpet, not hooked up to the plumbing, and the noise level was what I would have expected. But sitting in the cabinet, hooked up to the PVC, everything just vibrates a little making...

    External Pump Noise

I picked up a used 100 gallon RR tank, sump, pump recently. Owner said all operated just fine. The pump is an Iwaki MD-55. I'm setting up the tank as a reef and the flow of this pump is over 1000 GPH, from what I've read this should be enough turnover. I've only ever had submersible pumps and...

    Coral Beauty

wow! my poor fish... So I'll go get a 20 gallon for QT, that should be fine for the 2 clowns and goby for 8 weeks? Other than some PVC is there any reason to add anything else to the QT for the fish's sake? I know the goby loves his caves.

    Coral Beauty

Mike - So, the white spots fell off and will produce a bunch of these parasites in the DT? Is this cause for concern or should I just continue to monitor the other fish closely for the next couple weeks?

    Coral Beauty

I was following this guide: Marine Ich or White Spot Disease That started with the SG at 1.025 and said to remove 20% and replace with RODI....which would bring the SG down to 1.020 if I'm doing my math right. Since I was starting at 1.023 I brought it down .004 instead of .005. While doing...

    Coral Beauty

Bummer. i got home after work, setup the QT tank with water from the display and some RODI to bring down the SG to 1.019 (tank water was at 1.023). Used a sponge I keep in the sump, powerhead, and bubbler. The CB actually had no more white spots on her but her color was still very pale and she...

    Coral Beauty

Thanks for the links Mike. I was looking earlier and found those and read through them...they are now bookmarked! I'll get the QT tank up as soon as I get home and start with the hyposalinity treatment. Hopefully I'll have a success story to tell in 6 weeks.

    Coral Beauty

I will do that. Thanks! My QT is a 10 gallon, should I just monitor the other fish or put them all in and treat? I'm new to this and some reading online has shown contradicting views... The ich came from? Since everything had been fine for months with nothing new added my assumption is the...

    Coral Beauty

The setup is a 58 gallon with a 20 gallon refugium and 20 gallon sump. No corals, just fish, hermits, snails, LR and then macro in the fuge. Last week the AC unit in the room with the fish tank overheated and quit working while I was at work (window units). The door was closed to that room at...

    lighting for zoas in 58gallon

I have a 58 gallon tank (36 x 18 x 24ish) Been waiting to get the money to buy a good MH and T5HO fixture and that looks to be put off another 6 months or so. Right now I have a PC fixture, 2 x 55w. Is this lighting adequate for zoas, green star polyps, or other softies if they are kept...

    storing water

I'm 99.99% sure there's nothing wrong with doing this but wanted to ask. I have my own RODI unit and have been making batches of 20 gallons or so at a time and keeping it in my kitchen (so climate controlled) and then when I needed saltwater I would mix in 5 gallon buckets. Getting tired of...

    Red Algae help?

Update: Well, it's pretty obvious the Mexican Turbos aren't eating this stuff (and neither is anything else). The weekly rock scrubbing in buckets is keeping the rocks much nicer but it's stirred up enough that didn't get siphoned out and now the stuff is all over my sand and glass. Nothing is...

    Red Algae help?

From what I read on their website, they've had a freshwater only product for some time but in the last 12 months have released a marine only version of it. I read this article about it and how well it worked Product Review: AlgaeFix® Marine « Joe Jaworski’s Weblog

    Red Algae help?

Haven't seen a "clean trail" behind them. Might be a placebo effect but the area they hang out around seems cleaner. One got on a powerhead which is now clean other than some coraline but the powerhead had a mixture of different algaes on it. The article Thincat posted said it was around 2 weeks...

    Red Algae help?

Just posting an update on the situation: I bought 5 Mexican Turbo Snails last week so they've had 5 days of eating. On Friday I opted to use a toothbrush, take the rocks out and scrub the red algae off of them when I did my PWC. WOW was that water a mess after that. The rocks, powerheads, and...

    Red Algae help?

Great info! I could do this with rock that has no coral on it and hope the Turbos take care of what's on those rocks? Here's my plan now: 1) I'll get my cannister hooked back up and let it run for a week. 2) Get some Mexican Turbos ASAP 3) Cook the rocks that have no coral on them 4) delicately...

    Red Algae help?

thincat - thanks for the article. Over the past 9 months the best suitor for what I have was red turf algae but it didn't fit the description of being able to pull it off in clumps...and this stuff seems a more vibrant color than any photos I've seen...it may be though. Regardless, I think I'll...

    Red Algae help?

Oh yea food. Frozen mysis cubes. For a while I was letting them defrost on a paper towel to soak up water as it de-froze but after a month of doing that it seemed to have no impact so I quit doing it. I have a TDS meter on my unit and it's around 5ppm before the DI and 0ppm after the DI. I was...

    Red Algae help?

The bulbs are 3 months old. Power Compact, 4 65 watt bulbs. They are on for 8 hours a day. I'll gladly put them on a shorter cycle if it will help but not harm the corals I have? I'm using RO/DI water and always have. If it's phosphates what's the plan to get those down?

Ammonia: 0 Nitrite: 0 Nitrate:10-20 PH: 8.2 Specific Gravity: 1.024 Calcium: need to retest...it's been low for a while...mid 300s. Red Algae help?

I've had this algae for about 9 months now even with great maintenance, water parameters, scrubbing rocks, and on and on and on...I can't get rid of it. If I wouldn't kill my corals I'd simply keep the lights out for 2 weeks and see how it likes that! I asked my LFS as I saw some of the stuff...
